Your phone buzzes all evening. One customer sends a voice note, another sends a screenshot of last month's menu, a third asks "biryani available?" and disappears. Meanwhile the orders that come through the delivery apps carry a commission, and you never learn who those customers are.
Many restaurant owners in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad are asking the same question: can I take online orders myself?
Can a restaurant in Pakistan run its own online ordering system?
Yes. A restaurant can take orders directly through its own ordering website: customers pick from your menu, the order reaches your kitchen on WhatsApp or a screen, your rider delivers, and the customer pays cash or online. You keep the customer's details and pay no per-order commission. It works best alongside delivery apps, not instead of them: apps find new customers, while your own ordering serves the people who already like your food.
It is not magic, though. Your own system only gets orders if you tell people about it, and you still need riders, packaging and someone watching the orders.
What does a direct ordering system actually include?
Here is how a typical setup works:
- The customer picks from your menu. They open a link from your WhatsApp status, Instagram bio or Google profile. The menu shows photos, prices, sizes and add-ons like extra raita or a cold drink.
- The order reaches your kitchen. It arrives as a clean, readable message on WhatsApp, or on a tablet in the kitchen, with the address and phone number already filled in.
- Your rider delivers. Delivery areas and charges are set by you, so nobody orders from too far away.
- The customer pays. Cash on delivery to begin with; JazzCash, Easypaisa or card payment when you are ready.
Behind this sits a simple admin panel. You mark items "sold out", change prices before Eid, or switch ordering off when the kitchen is full, all from your phone. You don't need a developer for daily changes.
Should you leave foodpanda and other delivery apps?
Usually not. Delivery apps do one thing very well: they put you in front of people who have never heard of you. That is hard to do on your own.
What apps don't do is build your customer list. The customer belongs to the app, and you pay a commission on every order, including from people who would have ordered from you anyway. We won't quote anyone's commission here; check your own app agreement for the exact terms.
The sensible plan for most restaurants:
- Stay on the apps for discovery and new customers.
- Build direct ordering for your regulars, and invite them to it with a small card in every delivery bag or a message on WhatsApp.
- Watch which channel grows over a few months, then decide where to put your effort.
What do restaurants in different situations need?
These are illustrations of typical situations, not our clients:
- Say you run a family biryani shop in Gulberg with a loyal lunch crowd. Most of your regulars already message you on WhatsApp. A simple menu website that sends neat orders to your WhatsApp, with cash on delivery, may be all you need.
- Say you own a burger joint in Karachi with two branches. Orders need to go to the nearest branch, each branch has its own sold-out items, and you want a daily sales report. That is closer to a web application, with logins and branch dashboards.
- Say you run a home kitchen in Islamabad that cooks to pre-order. You need a menu with order cut-off times and advance payment, not instant delivery. A small site with an online payment option fits better.
How much does a restaurant ordering website cost?
It depends on what it must do. Our business websites start from PKR 50,000, and a simple menu-and-WhatsApp-order site sits near that level. Once you need branches, online payments, rider tracking or reports, it becomes a web application, and we quote it after a short call. See our fixed-price packages for how projects are scoped.
Timelines from our own planning: a business website takes 2–3 weeks; a web application takes 4–8 weeks. Payment follows milestones, 40% to start, so you pay as you see working software. After launch, domain and hosting typically cost PKR 10,000–15,000 a year, billed at cost and kept in your name.
Online payments add one step you can't rush: JazzCash, Easypaisa and card providers approve your merchant account themselves, after checking your business documents. We handle the application and the integration, but the decision is theirs.
What makes customers actually use it?
The system is the easy part. Getting regulars to switch is the work:
- Make the link easy to find. Put it in your WhatsApp Business profile, Instagram bio and Google Business Profile.
- Keep the menu honest. If an item is sold out, mark it. Nothing loses trust faster than "sorry, not available" after an order.
- Confirm every order quickly, especially cash orders, with a short WhatsApp message.
- Give a reason to order direct. A free drink or faster delivery for direct orders works better than asking nicely.
If WhatsApp is already your busiest channel, our guide to connecting WhatsApp Business and your website explains the buttons and prefilled messages that make this smooth. And if you're thinking of a wider online shop, read starting an online store with cash on delivery.
Checklist before you start
- Your menu, prices and photos are ready and up to date.
- You know your delivery areas and delivery charges.
- One person is responsible for watching and confirming orders.
- You've decided: cash on delivery only, or online payment too.
- The domain, hosting and admin login will be in your name.
Online ordering won't fix a slow kitchen or cold food, but it can turn your regulars into direct customers you actually know. If you'd like to talk through your own setup, send us a short message and someone from our Lahore team will reply.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using delivery apps if I build my own ordering?
Yes, and most restaurants should. Apps are good at bringing in new customers; your own ordering is for the regulars who already know you.
Do I need online payment to start taking direct orders?
No. Many restaurants start with cash on delivery and add JazzCash, Easypaisa or card payments later, once order volume justifies the gateway approval and setup.
Will my customers have to download an app?
Not at first. A fast ordering website opens straight from a link on WhatsApp, Instagram or Google, with nothing to install. An app only makes sense once you have many repeat customers.
Can the orders come to my kitchen on WhatsApp?
Yes. Orders can arrive as a clear WhatsApp message, on a simple kitchen screen, or both. We choose this with you based on how your kitchen already works.
